One method for handling negative space is to fill the composition completely to the brim so that there is very little area behind the subject. In Regan’s Rugosa Rose (opposite), the entire paper is nearly filled by the oversized blossom. Note that there is very little of the violet background and the flower dominates. I created the background by placing several sections of newspaper underneath the drawing surface, then used light-touch overlapping circular and oval strokes, lending a very soft effect. The cushioning of the newspaper layers and the gentle touch of the overlapping strokes are essential for the soft background here.
